FifthDomain is excited to announce that we are a finalist for the national Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) Awards after successfully winning the ACT award for Business & Industry Solution of the Year and receiving recognition in the ACT Platform Solution of the Year. The iAwards 2022 National Ceremony will be held on October 20 in Melbourne which FifthDomain will be attending.

As a small cyber security start-up, we’re thrilled to be recognised for our work in helping to solve the cyber skills gap in Australia. FifthDomain’s Assessor platform is a tool that allows organisations to not only assess candidates for cybersecurity roles, but also assess their existing cybersecurity team to identify any skills gaps.

Our clients have had great success stories of hiring cyber security professionals for their organisation using our tool. What sets FifthDomain’s Assessor platform apart is that it takes the bias out of hiring. Rather than relying on traditional recruitment screening tools such as CVs and interviews, Assessor provides candidates with a way to demonstrate their analytical and problem-solving skills, and potential, by completing bite-sized cyber challenges. This allows organisations recruiting for cyber security roles to identify candidates with skills and/or potential who may have been otherwise overlooked.

One example of FifthDomain helping our clients to find unexpected cyber talent was when Hannah, a hospitality worker from overseas, she was looking for a career change into cybersecurity. Hannah had lived in Australia for 13 years and has a degree in law.

Hannah was speaking to a colleague who suggested that she apply for a cyber role. As Hannah had no prior experience working in cyber security, she was apprehensive about applying but decided to submit her application. Hannah didn’t have a strong cyber security background and would have been overlooked for the role had her performance in Assessor shown her to be one of the highest performers in that recruitment round. When we asked Hannah what interested her about working in cyber security she said,

“A few years ago, my Facebook, Instagram and Gmail accounts were hacked. Someone logged in and changed the passwords. I was really angry and wanted to know how to protect my accounts and passwords.”

Hannah decided to study a part-time course at CIT in software development. During her studies, she took a unit in cybersecurity which piqued her interest. Hannah’s husband also works in IT, and he encouraged her to look for an IT role because there are so many opportunities within the industry.

Hannah is happy that she made the career change and enjoys the work. She said her team is very supportive and always happy to answer questions she has. As well as having used the Assessor platform during her job application process, Hannah uses FifthDomain’s Competitions and Learning Labs platform on a regular basis. She said the capture-the-flag competition she is currently completing is good at analysing cyber threats. We wish Hannah all the best on her cybersecurity journey.

FifthDomain would also like to thank AUCloud for their continual support. As a sovereign provider, their support makes a big difference when we are assessing candidates who will be responsible for safeguarding the Australian cyber space.
